Admission to Master's Degree at KU

Admission Requirements

Completed bachelor's or master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or a related area.
“Applicants who do not have an undergraduate degree in education or psychology should have a minimum of 15 undergraduate credit hours in the behavioral sciences, such as Psychology, Human Development, Sociology, Education, etc.”
  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0; and (if applicable) minimum graduate GPA of 3.5
  • Official GRE general exam scores (taken within the last five years) at the 50th percentile or higher
Proof of English proficiency
“Requirement verified via: 1) Graduation with a baccalaureate degree (or higher) earned in residence from an accredited English-medium U.S. college or university or a college or university in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, English-speaking province of Canada, or an English-speaking Caribbean country, with instruction conducted in English; or 2) Official scores from the TOEFL (20 on all part scores), IELTS-Academic (6.0 total score with no part score below 5.5), or PTE (55 overall score with no part score below 50). Scores must be less than two years old from the semester of admission.”
Personal statement
“Please describe:
  1. Why you are interested in this degree program, including what skills, competencies, and experiences you hope to gain in the program,
  2. Your career goals and how this degree program relates to your career goals (that is, how you see this program preparing you to meet your career objectives),
  3. Prior relevant educational, work, and research experiences,
  4. One research topic or issue that you would like to pursue in this program, including the faculty member with whom you would like to work, if known.”
